Who should attend:

This event is for clinicians, clinical specialist nurses and oncologists and all those in the cancer MDTs, including surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists and those working in palliative care. All oncology trainees from DSHOs upwards including, CMTs and registrars.

Aim:

To equip specialist clinicians and clinical specialist nurses with the in-depth knowledge and skill to inform critical decision making for complex acute oncology patients.

  • Discuss the challenges of communicating risk and uncertainty in the acute oncology setting

  • Explore the benefits & burdens of surgical interventions in the acute oncology patient

  • Explore how to decide  the appropriateness of critical interventions used.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         

Outcomes:

After the study day attendees should be better able to critically assess the best time and method of communicating risks and uncertainty to patients in the acute oncology setting. Attendees will be able to better analyse the options using risk/benefit methods of palliative surgery for their patients. Attendees will have resources to enable them to critically evaluate how appropriate a critical intervention is in a situation.
